Why Do Dogs Circle Before They Lay Down?

Dogs try to make a softer resting place by circling and digging before lying down. Animal behaviorists believed that this is an inherent habit handed down by ancient dogs that lived in the wilds to the modern domesticated dogs. Dogs circle the place where they have chosen to sleep to make sure that it is not occupied by animals that can pose a danger to their lives.

Circling before lying down is considered as dogs’ defensive behavior. By circling around before napping, the dog will see possible threats. The dog also circles around to get more room and to warn the other dogs not to encroach on his marked bed. Pet dogs need not circle before lying but its just that circling before lying down is an ingrained habit in them, so we see pet dogs doing this on a carpet as well :-).
